Why do these Koi fish have little things growing all over their bodies?

Question by My Avatar Is Beautiful: Why do these Koi fish have little things growing all over their bodies?
My friend has a koi pond and the koi fish started getting these little gray tentacle things all over their bodies. It’s sucking the life out of them it seems. They still eat but look like total sh**. We’ve been feeding them anti-parasite food, but it doesn’t seem to help.
Alright, thanks alot!

Get a big tank to put them in to treat them with medication, otherwise you will pollute your pond with medication.

Sounds like parasites, try some medicine instead of just food. Also, give them something to restore their slime-coat.

I couldn’t tell you what precisely they are- but they sound like anchor worms. Google the image and compare to what you have already seen.

It sounds like you need to shotgun (i.e. treat for several possible culprits at once) the pond before it gets any worse.

sounds like anchor worms, look it up and if that is the diagnosis try to find the med dimulin. also, anchor worms can be manually removed with tweezers, then add a condition to repair the slime coat, like prime.

More than likely anchor worm outbreak if they look like single “tentacles” coming from a bleeding hole.
You might try CyroPro Anchor Worm Fish Lice Treatment for pond application.Use per directions …. should be safe for any filtration you are using.

I would think the anti-parasite food you fed them would be for INTERNAL parasites, meaning inside their bodies. You should be treating them for EXTERNAL parasites, since you can see them on their bodies.
Go to a pet store like Petsmart or Fishworld and ask for a medicine that treats a whole bunch of external parasites, as you never know, they may be having more than one parasite.
After those “black things” dissapear, you should be making sure the water stays clean, as parasites dont usually come unless the water is dirty, and also, clean water makes them thrive, meaning they will heal quicker, grow, and be healthy, happy, etc.

Here’s two ways to do this:

Buy testing stuff from a pet store like Fishworld or Petsmart, they are great stores. Testing stuff like testing strips usually are pretty cheap.

Another way, is to visit the pet store every so often with a bagful ( doesn’t have to be very big, perhaps a small ziploc back size ? ) and ask them to test it for you. I get this done for free, but bring money just in case. If you’re unsure about whether the pet store your going to does this , call beforehand just in case.

Petsmart does this for free, not sure about the other stores though.

    Hope I helped

As to the dirtyy water causing you r problem, make sure you aren’t overfeeding them. If you are following package directions, you are probably overfeeding. cut the directions in half.
or maybe the pond is too small for the number of koi.
Koi need at least 1000 gallons each.
